Abnormal haemoglobins: detection & characterization

Haemoglobin (Hb) abnormalities though quite frequent, are generally detected in populations during surveys and programmes run for prevention of Hb disorders. Several methods are now available for detection of Hb abnormalities. In this review, the following are discussed: (i) the methods used for characterization of haemoglobin disorders; (ii) the problems linked to diagnosis of thalassaemic tra...

Haem degradation in abnormal haemoglobins.

The coupled oxidation of certain abnormal haemoglobins leads to different bile-pigment isomer distributions from that of normal haemoglobin. The isomer pattern may be correlated with the structure of the abnormal haemoglobin in the neighbourhood of the haem pocket. This is support for haem degradation by an intramolecular reaction.

Abnormal haemoglobins among pregnant women from Mozambique.

In a survey of 601 pregnant women in Mozambique, 34 (5.6%) were sickle cell trait carriers. Beta thalassaemia trait did not appear to be common. There was a slight rise in Hb F values in 49 women of the type reported previously in early pregnancy.

The abnormal haemoglobins in haemoglobin-H disease.

Two haemoglobins have been described that do not contain ac-chains: haemoglobin H (Rigas, Koler & Osgood, 1955, 1956; Gouttas, Fessas, Tsevremis & Xefteri, 1955) consists of four fA-polypeptide chains (Jones, Schroeder, Balog & Vinograd, 1959), and haemoglobin Bart's (Ager & Lehmann, 1958) consists of four yF-polypeptide chains (Hunt & Lehmann, 1959). These two abnormal haemoglobins are now ref...

Incidence of Abnormal Haemoglobins in Pulmonary Tuberculosis

There is evidence from the study of twins (Lenz, 1963; Carter, 1969) of a genetic predisposition to certain diseases, in particular pulmonary tuberculosis. But there are apparently no published reports of an association of pulmonary tuberculosis and ABO-Rh blood groups, haemoglobin, and immunoglobin types. Saha and Banerjee (1968) could not establish an association between ABO-Rh blood groups a...
